Yesterday one of the baboons in the centre, Buttercup, was spotted looking in pain and avoiding the rest of the troop. She was taken to the clinic and given some meds but unfortunately passed away in the early evening. Any animal that dies needs to have an autopsy to determine the specific cause – last night I sat in on Buttercup’s.
As soon as she was opened up a severe abdominal infection was evident, and the smell to go with it was horrendous! Every organ still needed to be checked with notes being made on each – it’s a messy job but a necessity in order to make sure it’s nothing contagious that may put the rest of the troop at risk. The cause of the actual infection is not yet known so some samples will be sent off to try to find out. Poor Buttercup!
